Thinking about getting your first tattoo?
That’s exciting! Whether you’ve been planning this for years or just decided on a whim, your first tattoo is a personal milestone. At Haunted Tattoo, we’re all about making your experience smooth, safe, and unforgettable.
Here’s everything you should know before walking into the shop.
1. Do Your Research
Look into tattoo styles (Traditional American, Japanese, black and grey, fine line, realism, etc.) and find what resonates with you. Check out our artist portfolios on Instagram or our website and follow artists whose work matches your vision. Websites like Pinterest or just Google image searches are a good place to browse for ideas.
2. Choose the Right Shop
Not all tattoo studios are created equal. You want a space that feels comfortable, safe, and professional. At Haunted Tattoo, we take pride in maintaining a clean, licensed studio with the highest hygiene standards.
But just as important as cleanliness is the vibe: we’ve built a space that’s open to everyone. All people. All bodies. All backgrounds. Whether it's your first tattoo or your fiftieth, you’ll be welcomed with zero judgment and total respect. Our team is friendly, experienced, and here to make sure you feel supported every step of the way.
We're here to give you great tattoos in a place where you feel completely at home.
3. Talk to Your Artist
Communication is key to getting a tattoo you’ll love forever. You don’t need to have every detail figured out—just bring whatever you’ve got. Whether it’s a photo, a rough sketch, or just a feeling you want to capture, your artist can help bring it to life.
At Haunted Tattoo, we take the time to listen. We’ll walk you through the process and talk about things like:
Style – what kind of tattooing fits your idea best (traditional, fine line, realism, etc.)
Size – how much detail you want and what will age well over time
Placement – how the tattoo flows with your body and how visible you want it
Skin and body considerations – making sure the design works well with your skin type and tone
This is a collaboration, and your input matters. Ask questions, speak up about any concerns, and don’t be shy. We’re here to make sure you leave with a tattoo that feels right for you—in every way.
4. Prepare for the Day
Get a good night’s sleep.
Eat a solid meal before your appointment.
Stay hydrated.
Avoid alcohol and drugs—they thin your blood and affect the process.
5. What It Feels Like
Let’s be honest—yes, tattoos hurt. But for most people, it’s completely manageable. The sensation is often described as a mix between a cat scratch, a sunburn, or hot sandpaper being dragged across your skin. It’s not exactly relaxing, but it’s rarely unbearable.
Pain levels vary depending on:
Placement – areas with more fat or muscle (like arms or thighs) usually hurt less, while bonier spots (ribs, ankles, sternum) can be more intense.
Size and time – a small tattoo might be over in 20 minutes; a larger one might take hours or multiple sessions.
Your mindset and body – being rested, fed, and hydrated makes a big difference. Anxiety can heighten pain, so deep breaths help.
The good news? Our artists at Haunted Tattoo work with you at a pace that feels right. We’ll check in during the session, take breaks if needed, and make sure you're as comfortable as possible throughout the process. You’re not expected to “tough it out”—this is your experience, and we’re here to support you through it.
Most people say once it’s done, the adrenaline kicks in, and the discomfort quickly fades into pride. And honestly? There’s nothing quite like seeing your new tattoo for the first time.
6. Aftercare is Everything
Your artist will give you detailed instructions. Follow them! Wash gently, moisturize, avoid swimming/sun, and don’t pick at it. A well-healed tattoo stays vibrant and clean.
If you forget what to do or jsut have questions, feel free to contact your artist or the shop. Or, visit our aftercare section by clicking HERE.
7. Finally - Don’t Overthink It (Too Much)!
It’s natural to be nervous. But remember: tattoos are about expression, memory, art. Trust your artist, trust your decision, and enjoy the moment. We want you to have an amazing experience from your first idea until after your first tattoo!
