Summertime Tattoo Care:
Keep Your Ink Bold All Season

YES - We are writing about protecting your tattoos AGAIN.
It is that important!
Summer in London might not always bring tropical heat, but when the sun does shine, your tattoos need a little extra love. Whether you’re freshly inked or flaunting long-loved designs, summertime can be harsh on your skin—and your artwork.
At Haunted Tattoo, we’re all about keeping your tattoos looking crisp and vibrant for years to come. Here’s our no-nonsense guide to summertime tattoo care.
☀️ Fresh Ink? Shade is Your Best Friend
Just got tattooed? Congrats! But now is not the time to hit the park in a crop top. New tattoos are essentially open wounds—they need protection from sun, sweat, dirt, and anything that could cause irritation or infection.
For fresh tattoos:
Stay out of direct sun for at least 2–3 weeks. UV rays can fade a healing tattoo fast.
Wear loose, breathable clothing over the area.
No swimming (sorry!)—that includes pools, lakes, and even long soaks in the bath.
🧴 SPF Is Your Tattoo’s Best Defence
Once your tattoo is fully healed, sunscreen becomes your go-to sidekick. The sun’s UV rays break down the pigment in your skin, causing colours to fade and lines to blur.
Use:
A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher
Fragrance-free formulas to avoid irritation
Stick or lotion formats (spray-on is easy to miss spots)
Reapply every couple of hours if you're outside, especially if you're sweating or swimming.
💧 Hydrated Skin = Happy Ink
Hot weather and sun exposure dry out your skin fast. Dry, flaky skin doesn’t just feel rough—it can make your tattoos look dull too.
Tips:
Drink plenty of water throughout the day
Use a non-greasy, unscented moisturiser daily
Avoid over-exfoliating or using harsh scrubs
🚫 Avoid These Common Summer Mistakes
Even seasoned tattoo lovers can slip up. Here are a few summertime no-nos:
Don’t tan over your tattoo, ever—UV exposure damages pigment permanently
Don’t use tanning oils or heavily scented lotions—they can irritate tattooed skin
Don’t ignore peeling or scabbing—let your skin heal naturally and don’t pick at it
